Imagine...being securely strapped in the cockpit of a boat resembling a Formula
One race car, screaming along at a speed in excess of 135 m.p.h., in and above
the water tops. Vibrating...pulsating...pinned to your seat, with the ever-present
whine of a fuel injected 325 h.p. engine propelling you and machine along as one...flirting with disaster, between the air and sea, defying both in the elusive conquest
of speed. You do not just view Formula One Powerboats - you feel them. Representing the newest designs in the state of the art technology of aerodynamic and hydrodynamic principals, these race vehicles are truly an exciting piece of race engineering. Dancing on top of the water at over 135 m.p.h., twenty powerboats in a race, makes for a visual experience not soon to be forgotten. Unlike racing on asphalt, the Formula One drivers must constantly change and adjust their driving technique to tune into the ever-changing water conditions. The twenty qualified powerboats accelerate from the starting dock and compete on a course approximately 1.5 miles long marked by inflatable turn buoys. The powerboat catamaran design which was developed in Italy over twenty years ago, utilizes a tunnel effect between two sponson sides or hulls. When speed increases, it creates a cushion of air, which in turn lifts the boat out of the water. This lifting action enables the driver to “dance” the boat above the water. In controlling the height above the water, “trim” control buttons, when activated alter the height and angle of the engine relative to the water. |
